New flora of Bavaria: The botanists reveal the flora!

A new flora is published in Bavaria, which offers an impressive overview of the flora of the state. This latest edition, which consists of four volumes and almost 3,000 pages, is the result of over 50 years of intensive research and documentation. The entire recording was carried out and coordinated by the Botanical State Collection of Munich.

The last comprehensive overview of the FL Flora Bavaria comes from 1914, but with this new flora such a mammoth plant is now being brought up to date. It not only shows the current variety of plants, but also historical data that has been collected over a period of 250 years. This includes the analysis of around 16 million observation data from which information about the current state and the change in the plant species could be obtained.

insights into the progress of botanical science

This comprehensive report on Flora Bavaria offers insights into the survival and the spread of species. Of the 5,886 documented plants, 3,065 of which are native. In addition, the new flora shows that 82 species have died out, which corresponds to 2.5 % of the entire local flora. Some species that have already been established in Bavaria are neophytes - plants that were introduced to Bavaria after the discovery of America in 1492. Of these neophytes, 380 have achieved permanent establishment, while others only occur sporadically.

Another interesting aspect is the fact that 88 plant species only occur in Bavaria worldwide. These endemic species have a particular biological meaning, which is why the protection of their habitats is of great importance.

The work contains colored distribution cards and photos that help readers visually grasp the variety of Bavarian flora. It is the result of a large number of investigations and cooperation between various institutions, including the Bavarian State Office for the Environment and the Botanical Collections of Bavaria.

The project is not only regarded as a scientific resource; It is also an important example of citizen participation in the field of botany. The committed participation of over 200 volunteers underlines the role that the public can play in scientific research.

The book presentation will take place in Munich on October 26, 2024 in a special event, the "Day of the Bavaria Flora". The editors and researchers are enthusiastic about finally being able to share the results of their decades of work with the public, and see great potential for future research and nature conservation in Bavaria.
