Young Oktoberfest: Visitors from 18 to 29 years on the upswing!
Munich attracts more and more young people, and this is clearly reflected at the Oktoberfest. A current analysis, carried out by "O2 Telefónica" and the analysis company "Invenium", shows that 27 percent of the adult visitors are between the ages of 18 and 29 in the first nine days of the festival. This number means an increase of six percentage points since the previous year and almost a doubling since 2019.
If you look at the age group of 50 to 59-year-olds, this year accounts for 21 percent of visitors, while the 30- to 39-year-olds make up almost 20 percent. It is a remarkable trend that indicates that the Oktoberfest is becoming increasingly attractive for younger ones.
International visitor flows
Another exciting detail is the high proportion of international guests. Around a quarter of the visitors come from abroad. The USA, followed by visitors from Italy and the United Kingdom, dominate. A particularly striking event came on the second weekend of the festival, which became known as the "Italian weekend". On these two days, visitors from Italy temporarily exceeded the number of American guests.
The attraction of the festival is not limited to international tourists. The Oktoberfest also has an enormous suction effect within Germany. Almost every German circle, district and every independent city travels to the festival every day. Visitors from Munich and the surrounding area, including the districts of Fürstenfeldbruck and Dachau, are particularly noteworthy
an amusing fact: Even people from the North Sea island of Sylt make their way to Munich to visit the Oktoberfest on the same day. This lively mobility illustrates how important this event is not only for local but also for national visitors.
Although it seems tempting to compare the cities in terms of their number of visitors, this is not so easy due to the survey methodology. The analysis does not take any overnight stays in Munich.
The evaluation of the data was carried out in compliance with data protection so that no personal address data was used. These measures are important to protect the privacy of the guests, while interesting insights into the visitor structure of the Oktoberfest are gained.
Overall, it can be seen that the Oktoberfest is an incomparable festival of diversity, which attracts both young and older visitors from home and abroad. These trends could be groundbreaking for the future orientation of the festival and illustrate the cultural importance of this event in Germany.
