Christology in Transhumanism: Challenge for Orthodox theology

Wien, Österreich - in Vienna is an important conference ahead, which deals with Orthodox Christology and the challenges of transhumanism. The conference, supervised by the research center "Religion and Transformation in Contemporary Society", takes place on December 11th and 12th. It is entitled "Christological Discourses in the era of transhumanism" and aims to promote a contemporary understanding of Christ. In this context, the initiator, Prof. Ioan Moga, emphasized that orthodox theology had greater difficulties compared to Western theologies to address modern social challenges, such as transhumanism. "Although Orthodox theology is constantly emphasizing its Christocentricity, there have been hardly any noticeable contributions to Christology in the past 20 years," said Moga, but this wanted to change the conference by hearing less well -known voices.

thematic focus and lectures

The opening event on Wednesday includes a lecture by Prof. Theodoros Alexopoulos, which will deal with the old church Christology in the interreligious dialogue. This is supplemented by a contribution by Alexandru Ioni, which illuminates the discussion about being a Jew's Jesus Christ in the Orthodox context after Nicea's Council. On Thursday, the focus is on the relationship between Christology and anthropology, where, among other things, the questions of transhumanism and human identity are discussed. Prof. Stefanos Athanasiou from the LMU Munich will appeal to the topic of the removal in transhumanism, while Prof. Georgiana Huian will speak about vulnerability and their anthropological implications.

The conference is a significant attempt to further develop Orthodox Christology and to adapt to contemporary challenges. This is done in a frame that illuminates both orthodox and newer, lesser -known perspectives. The event therefore reacts not only to transhumanism, but also to the needs of a changing theological landscape, which is increasingly shaped by the influence of Paul Tillich and his approaches to religious and Christology, as is on Academia.edu is explained in detail.
