Volunteering as the key to integration: refugees tackle!
Gräfendorf, Deutschland - In Germany, many refugees are desperately waiting for their work permits! While Ukrainian refugees are often allowed to work after just a few weeks, others have to wait up to a whole year for their hearing and approval. This unbearable waiting period leads to isolation and uncertainty. But there is hope! Voluntary activities and work opportunities could be the key to Integration!
Asylum seekers have the opportunity to get involved in so -called work opportunities that are anchored in the Asylum Seekers Benefit Act. You can help with municipal tasks for 80 cents per hour. Mayor Johannes Wagenpfahl from Gräfendorf has been using this possibility for years and has asylum seekers work at the autumn cut of the cemeteries. "These tasks help you bring your skills and gain valuable experience," said Wagenpfahl.
volunteer as a way out
But not only work opportunities offer a perspective! The Spessart Nature Park relies on volunteering and has already gained a lot of positive experiences. Managing Director Oliver Kaiser reports that the willingness of the locals to volunteer has decreased. "Only one of the 50 people requested has promised," complains Kaiser. Therefore, refugees are specifically approached to involve them in the voluntary work.
The volunteer flat rate of around twelve euros per hour ensures that everyone is treated equally, regardless of their origin. However, the monthly payments are capped to 250 euros, which means that you do not get rich, but at least get an almost normal remuneration. However, the bureaucratic hurdles are high! Jochum, project manager in the nature park, had to communicate with offices for weeks to clarify the volunteer flat rate for asylum seekers.
Markus Rill from the district office in Main-Spessart confirms that refugees can work on a voluntary basis regardless of their residence status. Integration pilots and the “Emil” volunteer agency are available for consultations for interested parties. "The refugees are free to contact clubs or organizations directly," explains Rill.
