Memory of 19 unknown soldiers: Kitzingen is reminiscent of the victims

On Memorial Day, numerous citizens gathered in Kitzingen to commemorate the victims of wars and terrorism. Mayor Stefan Güntner led the ceremony, supported by the fire brigade, red cross and reservists. The event was musically framed by the Protestant trombone choir and the choir intact. Güntner emphasized the shattering figures: 55 million deaths in World War II and a total of 80 million in the First World War - unimaginable losses that have shaped humanity.

The OB reminded that many had believed that the topic of war in Europe was over by February 24, 2022. But the Russian attack on Ukraine brutally brought back reality. The pictures from Ukraine aroused painful memories of the destruction and the loss, which Kitzingen also experienced on February 23, 1945. Güntner spoke of the responsibility to counter the beginnings of terrorism and violence and to preserve the culture of remembrance.

commemoration of the unknown

The reservist's memory of 19 unknown anti-aircraft soldiers, who lost their lives during the war in the bombed city, was particularly moving. These soldiers came from their barracks to help, but never returned. Her identity remains unknown - no age, no place of origin, no one who mourns them. Flowers and candles were laid down to honor their courage and victim. Kitzingen shows itself as a cosmopolitan city that works for tolerance and diversity while at the same time not forgets the horrors of the past.
