Training balance 2023: Opportunities and challenges in the Allgäu!

Kempten, Deutschland - In the Allgäu, an exciting picture on the training market shows! The Kempten-Memmingen agency, the IHK Schwaben and the HWK Schwaben have presented the current figures for the training year 2023/2024. The balance is mixed: While the number of training seekers is increasing, the number of reported apprenticeships drops dramatically. A clear trend that presents the young people with great challenges!

Maria Amtmann, the head of the employment agency, emphasizes that it is more difficult for young people today to find the right training position. In the Kempten-Memmingen district, there were 6,003 apprenticeships reported in September, but only 3,153 training seekers. This means a decrease of 6 percent at apprenticeships compared to the previous year, while the number of applicants has increased by almost 5 percent. It is particularly striking that many of the new applicants have a migration background, which is considered great potential.

decline in apprenticeships in the Allgäu

The region of Ober- and Ostallgäu lists the strongest decline in apprenticeships. In Memmingen, the number fell by 4.6 percent, while the city of Kempten experienced a decline of 4.3 percent. In the Oberallgäu, the decline at 23.6 percent is particularly dramatic, while the city of Kaufbeuren and the Ostallgäu were able to record slight growth among the training seekers. The IHK Schwaben emphasizes that the willingness to train in industry and trade is still high, but the quality of applicants and unfavorable framework conditions are troubled by companies.

The HWK Schwaben, on the other hand, reports an increase in the newly concluded training contracts of 2.96 percent compared to the previous year. Volker Zimmermann, deputy general manager, is optimistic and emphasizes the robustness of the craft in the current economic situation. Most new contracts have been concluded in the field of motor vehicle mechatronics and electrical engineering. But the shortage of skilled workers remains a big challenge for the companies!
