Kaufbeuren is reminiscent of: new exhibition on Nazi compulsory work from November!

A dramatic chapter of history is rolled up in Kaufbeuren! At the end of November, the city museum starts with a sensational exhibition that illuminates the dark shadows of Nazi compulsory work. From November 2024, the museum will present a comprehensive review of the terrible events that cost many lives under the title "Mass crimes. Kaufbeuren dares to remember".

The city museum has been actively involved in the processing of the Nazi past for almost ten years. According to critical comments on the design design in 2013, numerous projects were launched, including the moving special exhibition "Kaufbeuren under the swastika". But now it is becoming even more concrete: The new exhibition will expressly address the living conditions of the forced laborers who had to work for the armaments industry during the Second World War. Over 4,200 names of forced laborers are publicly recognized for the first time and show the cruel reality of the time.

insights into the past

The American armed forces freed thousands of people in Kaufbeuren at the end of April 1945 who were victims of a brutal exploitation system. The exhibition will not only shed light on the individual fates, but also critically question the insufficient legal work -out of forced labor in the post -war period. Contemporary witnesses, photographs and biographies are shown that give the brave survivors a face.

In addition, from January 23 to April 28, 2025, the artistic search for traces "Memorial Eint Starisian" by Cornelia Renz will be presented. It will represent the memories of the Nazi past in Kaufburens in a new light. With her artistic approach, she will strengthen the voices of the past and at the same time raise questions about home and identity. The city museum has also planned an exciting accompanying program to further deepen the topic. The project is supported by the Cultural Fund of the Bavarian State Ministry for Science and Art - a sign that the memory of this dark time must be kept alive!
