Hunting study 2024: Wild stocks drop through weather extreme!
The wildlife population in Austria faces major challenges. According to the Jagdverband there was a dramatic decline in the number of shells, including deer, red and wild boar in 2024. Due to the extreme weather conditions, in particular heavy rainfalls and cold periods in September, diseases such as pneumonia, which affected the deer in particular, increased. This led to an increase in the fall game and prevented an adequate hunting, the firing volume fell by 7 percent and amounts to only 79,820. The situation in wild boar is even more critical: there was a decline in the kills of 41 percent, but there is hope of recovery of the stocks soon, since wild boars are known for their ability to reproduce.
Planning the hunting slips
In Bavaria, on the other hand, the next three -year shooting plan for roe deer will be set up. A new, simple calculation system is intended to help determine the target shot more effectively. This system takes into account the forest area and the ban on a more realistic number for shooting. An example shows that up to 55 deer could be shot annually with a middle class of 300 hectares of forest and a portable bleeding situation. This methodical approach could also be important for the situation in Austria in order to be able to react better to the challenges in the wild population, as in Jagdforum
Regulation of game stocks remains a decisive challenge for hunters in both countries. While hunting statistics in Austria are strongly shaped by the extreme weather conditions and the associated health problems of the animals, the methodology in Germany encourages targeted hunting planning to maintain the stocks.
