MVV expansion: Garmisch-Partenkirchen becomes part of the Munich transport association!

The Munich Transport Association (MVV) plans to expand its area, which will drastically improve both the connection and the price structure for passengers. From January 1, 2025, the Landsberg districts on Lech and Weilheim-Schongau will join the MVV, followed by Garmisch-Partenkirchen, which will be integrated on January 1, 2026. This merger will increase the population in the MVV area by a further 90,000 inhabitants from 22 municipalities, which extends the entire area to 11,365 square kilometers, as both the href = "https://muenchen.t-online.de/region/id_100550216/mvv-erwäit-sein-garmisch-artenkirchen-ab-2026-dabei.html"> T-Online Report.

revolution in the ticket price

This integration also goes hand in hand with considerable price reductions. In the future, passengers benefit from uniform prices throughout the association. An example: The ticket price from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Mittenwald will fall from 6.60 euros to only 1.90 euros. Other routes such as Murnau and Oberammergau are also significantly cheaper. According to Minister Christian Bernreiter, this will not only benefit the commuters, but also increase the attractiveness for tourists who can now get to the region easier and cheaper from Munich Airport.

The district administrator of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Anton Speer, sees this decision a “milestone” for the district, which has been working on an MVV for five years. "Now the time has finally come," he says about the positive development. The new structure leads to a standardization of the timetables and ensures more attractive access to public transport, which is particularly important in a region living from tourism.
