The 1st FC Nürnberg is classified in a current analysis of the "kicker" as a big winner when distributing the TV money in the second division. Despite this positive assessment, there are serious financial challenges that the association has to deal with. CFO Stefan Heim described the situation as a “structural deficit” of five million euros and reported on a negative equity of 2.5 million euros. In order to improve the financial situation, the club is looking for possibilities for reducing costs and generating income, including avoiding an expensive training camp.
This season, the FCN TV money of EUR 12.83 million expects an increase of 1.07 million euros compared to the previous season (11.76 million euros). The club currently takes ninth place in the second division ranking. Heim pointed out that the balance sheet for the past financial year shows 14.2 million euros in TV funds, less 1.5 million euros from the DFB Cup remain 12.7 million euros for the league. The calculations of the DFL could still deviate due to late payments from DAZN and varying income from the junior column.
growth of TV money and young talent
The TV funds are an essential source of income for the 1. FC Nürnberg, which records the second largest increase in TV funds according to the climbers this season. According to the analysis of clubfokus.de, the TV revenue of the FCN rose from 11.76 million euros to 12.83 million euros, while the neighboring Greuther Fürth association had to accept a decline of 1.87 million euros compared to the pre-season. An essential factor for the increase in TV money is the consideration of the youngsters, which is 4 percent of the proceeds from marketing German-language media rights. The mandatory operating times and the training of young players are rewarded.
The distribution of national TV money is carried out via different pillars: 50 percent of the funds are distributed evenly among the clubs, 43 percent flow based on sporting performance and 3 percent are intended for incentives to invest in the club brands. In addition, clubs from the 2nd Bundesliga receive 3 percent of the international revenue. The final values of the TV money are not yet fixed and can therefore change.
In view of the perspectives of the association, Board of Directors Niels Rossow announced that it would fight for additional TV money, especially during the upcoming DFL general meeting on January 16. A new TV contract that comes into force from the 2025/26 season provides for an annual increase of 21 million euros, which could significantly improve the financial possibilities of the clubs.
