Landsberg rehearses the emergency: protection fence against African swine fever!
In an exciting scenario that attracted the attention of farmers, the veterinary offices from Landsberg, Fürstenfeldbruck and Starnberg tried the emergency on a cool November morning! An electric protection fence was built between Igling and Erpfting to prepare for a possible outbreak of the African swine plague (ASP). A tractor diligently transported the white fence piles, while a group of experts, equipped with reflective warning jackets, monitored installation.
The African swine fever is a devastating viral infection that mainly affects house and wild boars and, in almost all cases, ends fatally. "The virus is harmless to humans," emphasizes the Bavarian Ministry of Agriculture. But the danger is real: since the first proof in Germany in 2020, ASP has been rapidly spreading, especially in Brandenburg and other federal states. Dr. Michael Veith, the head of the Landsberg veterinary office, warns: "We have to prepare for the fact that the virus could also appear with us."
protective measures in focus
The exercise served to test the structure of the protection fence, which could play a crucial role in an emergency. "The fence is an initial measure to infect the core area around the find and prevent the spread of the disease," explains Veith. The electric fences have already proven themselves in other regions because pigs are very sensitive to electricity. Yellow warning signs on the top strand are supposed to warn walkers and cyclists of an accidental electric shock.
Although the fence was only built for one exercise that day and was dismantled in the evening, the message is clear: the authorities are ready to act quickly in the event of an outbreak. Information for the population would be provided in an emergency via QR codes, a citizen phone and a website. The preparations are made and the alert willingness is high!
