Green demand more sleeping places for homeless women in Saarbrücken!

The local association Saarbrücken Mitte from Bündnis 90 / The Greens supported the station mission at Saarbrück's main train station in the Christmas season. The problem of too few sleeping places for homeless women in Saarbrücken is discussed. The station mission, supported by Diakonie and Caritas, is also active during the holidays and offers a warm place of residence for travelers and lonely people between track 5 and 12.

The board of the Greens has taken care of cakes and pastries from the Heil bakery and distributed them to the regular guests. Judith Rachel, co-chair of the Greens, handed over the donations and spoke to Thorsten Junk, the coordinator of the station mission. Rachel emphasizes the need to pass on helpers to social institutions, and indicates bottlenecks in sleeping places for women. The Greens demand from the city administration and the state government to set up more sleeping for homeless women.

station mission in Munich offers support

parallel to the situation in Saarbrücken, the Munich station mission has been offering women in acute emergencies since April 2023. This facility is open around the clock, 365 days a year and is available both travelers and women in social difficulties or crises, including their children. In the night between 9:30 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., the station mission is often the only place where women are recorded in need.

In 2019, the station mission in Munich recorded 1212 overnight stays, 123 of them for children. Bettina Spahn, head of the Catholic station mission, emphasizes the need for a safe overnight stay and the concern for basic needs such as hygiene, food and clothing. Barbara Thoma, head of the Protestant station mission, emphasizes that the existing gap in the social aid system urgently had to be filled. Since April 2023, a four -bed room has been available in a nearby pension for women in need.

In addition, a contingent of 20 educational hours enables more intensive care and cooperation with other institutions. The Archdiocese of Munich and Freising finances this offer for two years, while the Munich Foundation supported the interior of the new accommodation facility. Many donors have already provided earmarked funds to support this important auxiliary measure.
