Freising relies on cargo bike: shopping environmentally friendly becomes a hit!
Freising, Deutschland - In Freising, cargo bikes are becoming increasingly popular, which are used as an environmentally friendly alternative to the car. Ulrich Vogl from the ÖDP described the development as "a success story" after Dominik Fuchs, the city's mobility officer, presented a positive balance in the committee for planning, building and environment. In the city councils, the decision was made to hand over the use of the cargo bike system to the municipal utilities and to increase the fees moderately.
The city of Freising provides a total of sixteen cargo bikes, which have been loaned at eight different parking spaces since August 2022. The annual operating costs of around 30,000 euros are borne by the city, while all income from the usage fees flow to the Sigo company. This is responsible for the management of the system, maintenance, repairs and customer support.
use and popularity
The use of the cargo bikes experiences a significant increase in the warm months. According to Statistics from Sigo, 745 borrowing culminated in June 2023. In the colder months, the use falls on expected 110 to 150 borrowing per month. The most frequently used loan station is the stone center, followed by Moosstraße and the library of the Technical University of Munich on the Weihenstephan campus. The city plans additional stations to further meet the need.
An outstanding result of a survey shows that 69 percent of the user provides information on a car ride by borrowing cargo bikes. Fuchs emphasizes that the cargo wheel system can thus be successfully seen as an attractive and sustainable alternative to your own car.
changes in the rental fees
To keep the system stable and to offer attractive offers for frequent users, the loan fees were adjusted. In the future, a fee of 1.50 euros will be due for the first half hour, a measure that was introduced primarily at the stone park due to the frequent "fun trips". The further costs remain at 1.50 euros every further half hours and the daily price is still 19.50 euros. Users who often borrow have the option of booking special packages via an app from Sigo.
The city expects these adjustments to generate additional income. So far, the annual income was around 15,000 euros. The city plans to maintain half of the income that goes beyond this amount in order to benefit from the additional income.
The administration of the loan system is currently being taken over by the city, but is planned to be handed over to the Parkhaus and Verkehrs-GmbH of Stadtwerke. This should support the bundling of mobility services in Freising.
