Mayor election in Hallbergmoos: Who wins the exciting race?
On Sunday, an exciting mayoral election will take place in Hallbergmoos, which is of great importance for both the citizens and the candidates. After the announcement by Josef Niedermair (CSU) to put his office down for health reasons, there are now three applicants who are fighting for his successor: Tanja Knieler (CSU), Benjamin Henn (FW) and Stefan Kronner (independent). The starting point is uncertain because all three candidates are well networked in the community and the voters are known to them.
The Hallbergmooser have the choice between 8725 citizens entitled to vote. By Thursday, around 2,300 postal voting documents were sent, which, according to election manager Michael Kirmayer, is comparable to the figures from the past state and European elections. A total of 16 polling stations are available in which 104 volunteers support voters. The results of the election will be presented in the large meeting room of the town hall from 6 p.m. Whether the presentation can also be followed online was still unclear by a provider change.
candidacies and their meanings
Niedermair, who took over the office in 2021, shocked the community with his resignation after he ran at a time when the community suffered from Harald Reents (CSU). He had received 89.26 percent of the vote in his election, but the turnout was only 35.28 percent. A clear difference to the events in the recent past, where citizen participation was usually rather low.
In the last mayoral election 2020, Reents were able to win with 56.1 percent in the first ballot, but also the turnout was only 53.2 percent. Participation of over 35 percent in this election would be progress for the municipality, but the skepticism remains, since earlier elections, such as those from 2014, were also a disappointment with a turnout of only 48.6 percent.
financial challenges
The new mayor will face several challenges. The effects of the departure of SAP concern the income of trade tax. In addition, there are important mandatory tasks such as the construction of fire station in Hallbergmoos and Goldach as well as the medium to long-term planning of an additional primary school. These financial burdens will be very busy with the new incumbent.
The next round of election could take place in two weeks on November 3 if no candidate in the first ballot achieves the necessary majority. For the new mayor, January will be the month in which he or she moves into the town hall. The upcoming choice is not only in the sign of the change, but also the hope of a higher voter participation and a positive change in local politics.
