Bird protection in the Berchtesgadener Land: five young birds conquer the sky!

At the annual general meeting of the BGL district group in the Landesbund for Bird and Nature Conservation in Bavaria, which took place in the pavilion of the Evangelical City Church, district group chairman Toni Wegscheider reported impressive progress in bird protection. The highlights were tours in Haarmoos, the new planting of biosphere hedges and active operations in biotope and species protection. The members were enthusiastic about the positive developments and the committed use of the volunteers.

A real bang was the lecture by biosphere ranger Katja Girschick about the Kiebitzschutz project in the Berchtesgadener Land. In a remarkable joint project with farmers, five fledged young birds were successfully released this summer! The project is fighting the dramatic decline in the Kiebitz population, which has dropped by almost 90 percent in the past 30 years. Volunteers will also be sought from February to June next year to continue to help the strongly endangered floor fries. If you want to get involved, you can contact the biosphere region or the landscape maintenance association BGL.

awards for loyal members and natural gardens

The meeting was also a festival of honors! Numerous members were awarded for their longstanding loyalty, including Max Mosinger from Freilassing and Dr. Wolfgang Scherzinger from Bischofswiesen, who have been part of the club for 50 years. Ralf Reuter motivated those present to participate in the “Bird -friendly garden” project, which promotes the natural design of gardens and distinguishes them with a badge. This makes an important contribution to biodiversity.

Another highlight was the review of Veronika Heel for the success of amphibian protection. Last spring, significantly more frogs, toads and newts could be saved from road to death. The meeting ended with a positive outlook on the upcoming projects and the tireless efforts for nature conservation.
