Rosenheim starts new project: old fruit varieties back into the meadows!
An exciting new chapter for fruit growing culture in Upper Bavaria begins! The Rosenheim district committee unanimously approved the successor project "Apfel-Birne-Berge 2.0", which has the goal of reviving old and forgotten apple and pear varieties in the next four years. This ambitious project ends on December 31, 2028 and promises to enrich the domestic fruit gardens with a variety of rare varieties.
In recent years, 272 unknown and rare apple and pear types have been secured in the Upper Bavarian pre-Alpine districts. Thanks to the offspring, these varieties could be preserved from the disappearance. Over 600 spindle trees and more than 700 high -stems were planted in six variety conservation gardens, including three in the Rosenheim district. District Administrator Otto Lederer emphasized: "The successor project is no longer about gathering varieties, but spreading them and planting them again in the region." These old varieties could also play a key role in the fight against climate change because their adaptability is to be examined in changes.
research and marketing in focus
The new biodiversity project "Apple-Birne-Berge 2.0" attaches great importance to the re-spread of the secured varieties in the region's orchards. Seminars for beginners and advanced users should pass on the knowledge of these valuable varieties. A decisive factor for the preservation of the orchards and the old regional locations will be the marketability of the fruits. Research will also play a central role, since the owners of orchards want to learn more about the multiplication and the uses of the old varieties. Some of these varieties have already proven to be suitable for the schnapps distillery, which is underlined by several awards.
The sponsorship of the project remains at the Rosenheim district, with an estimated total cost of almost 420,000 euros for the four -year term. The district will contribute around 3,700 euros annually. The approval of the district committee depends on the participation of the five other Upper Bavarian pre -Alpine districts, which should also participate in the financing. The project is also supported by the Bavarian Nature Conservation Fund and the Upper Bavaria district.
