Cat elend in Bavaria: Castration obligation could help!

Cat elend in Bavaria: Castration obligation could help!

A terrifying picture of cat elend opens up in the Free State of Bavaria! In Freilassing, Monika Brunnauer tirelessly fights against the catastrophic oversupply of abandoned cats. More than 20 unkempt kitty, which were captured by the farmer from the Berchtesgadener Land, have increased uncontrollably. A wildcat gives birth to eight kittens in the shelter - but only two survival. Her sad story is just one of many in the Bavarian animal shelters that are in a merciless struggle against miserable conditions.

The cat protection regulation, which has already shown success in certain municipalities, is intended to help to curb the cat elend. With regulations for registration, labeling and, above all, castration of freelancers could soon be a thing of the past. Running is one of the first cities to implement this regulation, and the number of stray cats has already dropped by 40 percent! In 2022, the animal shelter employees in Freilassing accepted 25 cats from Laufen - this year there are only nine!

urgent appeal for the Bavaria -wide regulation!

The misery is far from overcome. While some municipalities such as Utting are already going ahead, the Bavarian Ministry of the Environment does not show any initiative for the nationwide introduction of the cat protection regulation. The Ministry is evading its responsibility and appeals to the individual municipalities to find their own solutions. In many communities, the animal shelters are at the limit - some have even imposed on admission stops! Private foster homes often jump in to fulfill this community task, while professional animal welfare organizations desperately ask for support. Time is forced, because the cat elend does not end!
