Bamberg faces a challenge: where to go with 800 refugees?

Bamberg, Deutschland - In Bamberg it is bubbling! The closure of the anchor center is imminent and the city has to prepare for the accommodation of around 800 refugees. But where to go with these people? The top of the city has clear ideas and advises against three locations that are considered intolerable. Mayor Jonas Glüsenkamp (Greens) and Mayor Andreas Starke (SPD) emphasize that the burden for the residents may no longer increase.

The anchor center, which has been the first point of contact for asylum seekers since 2018, is scheduled to close by December 31, 2025 at the latest. But the uncertainty remains: Bavaria's Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) makes the closure be questioned. In a current proposal, the city has now brought a decentralized accommodation in 26 different areas of the city. Strong explains that Bamberg has enough capacities to accommodate the required refugees if the closure is actually made.

locations that are excluded

The city has decided not to consider the social spaces Volkspark, Bamberg-Ost and Realh/Bamberg-Süd for the accommodation of asylum seekers. These areas were excluded due to their social challenges. "The anchor center has exceptionally burdened Bamberg-Ost over the past nine years," said Starke. However, the city administration has identified numerous other areas that are suitable for accommodation, including public green spaces and school locations.

The Bamberg citizens are called to comment on the suggestions. You can make your statements about the new locations by January 8th. The city of Bamberg will set up a central information page to provide all relevant details. On November 27, the city council will be discussed again on the Situation. Time is pushing and the city has to act to master the challenges of refugee accommodation!
