Cranes in Wolfratshausen: New route ensures autumn spectacle!
A spectacular spectacle in the sky over Upper Bavaria! Unusually many cranes are currently moving south in large squads. These majestic birds have discovered a new route that leads them along the Alpine edge towards southwestern Europe and North Africa. The Landesbund for Bird and Nature Conservation (LBV) reports of impressive sightings in which up to several thousand cranes can be observed at the same time. By mid -November, more of these impressive migratory birds are expected in the sky.
The managing director of the LBV in the district, Sabine Tappertzhofen, was lucky enough to see a group of 100 to 200 cranes between Königsdorf and Beuerberg. "First I heard her trumpet-like calls. Then I saw the V-shape in the sky further afar," she says enthusiastically. Dr. Miriam Hansbauer, spokeswoman for the board of the Kranichschutz Germany Working Group, describes the current situation as a "extraordinary autumn spectacle". As many cranes than ever before, and conservationists advise: "Head up and ears!"
new routes and their secrets
The cranes, also known as grus grus, reach speeds of 50 to 70 km/h and mainly come from Eastern Europe. They fly via Hungary to Austria and cross southern Bavaria before heading their rest areas in the French Camargue. The reasons for the new flight route are diverse and not fully clarified. It is believed that experienced old birds pass on information about new routes, while climate change and the expansion of the breeding areas could also play a role.
The cranes are based on striking landscape features and prefer to pull in high pressure weather in order to be carried by cheap winds. Their impressive size of up to 1.30 meters and the ability to fly to southern Europe make them a fascinating sight. Thanks to decades of protective measures, the crane population in Europe has recovered, and around 50 breeding pairs can now be found in Bavaria, especially in the Upper Palatinate. In order to support these impressive birds in the long term, the protection of their habitats remains of crucial importance.
