Aschaffenburg 2040: Green light for a future worth living!

Aschaffenburg, Deutschland - Aschaffenburg is on the edge of a green revolution! The vision for the city of the future was lively discussed at the first future congress of the architect and engineering association (AIV). Over 100 participants, including citizens, association representatives and urban planners, gathered in the technical university to brainstorms about innovative ideas for climate adaptation and improving the quality of life. The suggestions range from pedestrian zones lined with shade trees, to bubbling streams and green facades. A truly inspiring picture of Aschaffenburg that could become a reality in 15 years!

But the implementation of these utopias is not a sugar. AIV chairman Bernhard Kessler warned of the "inertia" and "listlessness", which hinder many projects. "We have to activate and take people with us," he emphasized. Dirk Kleinerüschkamp, the current chief planner, added that climate protection should not polarize. Instead, citizens should be brought together to create places where they feel comfortable. "Nature is not an abstract concept, but makes Aschaffenburg worth living," said Kleinerüschkamp.

Green ideas and challenges

A Highlight of the congress were the "hiking trees" in Damm, which are called "Green To Go". Architect Anja Schlemmer plans to place mobile trees in the city to promote the green infrastructure. But the search for location is difficult because many residents hesitate to sacrifice their parking space for a tree. The greening of the facade is initially met with skepticism, but is increasingly being accepted. André Kazmierski, Managing Director of the Stadtbau, reported new construction projects that integrate city green.

The future visions are diverse: a tree, car -free zones within the city area and a redesign of the theater square with water fountains and more trees per ten inhabitants. "We have to give people the fun of such places," said Rico Emge, city planner from Berlin. The results of the congress should flow into urban planning and actively involve the citizens, because the future of Aschaffenburg is in the hands of everyone!
