Aiwanger under pressure: approval of the debt package - a political risk!
In a dramatic turn of political events in Bavaria, Hubert Aiwanger, head of the free voters, has finally overcome his initial skepticism compared to a loss of billions. The pressure from the Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) was apparently too great to risk a blockade of the constitutional change. Aiwanger revealed that a rejection of it would have resulted in immediate dismissal. "If I wanted it, I wouldn't be a deputy prime minister and minister here," he said in an interview with RTL. In the event of its refusal, the SPD might have taken over the government in Bavaria, which would have had significant negative consequences for Aiwanger, as well as OE24 reported. The Situation continued to escalate when Aiwanger had to endure hard criticism from the CSU side. Klaus Holetschek, CSU parliamentary group leader in the Bavarian state parliament, found that Aiwanger's supposed attempt to block the important financial package had significantly damaged Bavaria's reputation. The tightened internal dispute within the free voters could therefore burden the Bayern coalition, as well as Augsburger Allgemeine . Aiwanger was forced to give in to the pressure, since Bavaria's consent in the Federal Council not only a political decision, but a need to secure your own position.
The change of the Basic Law needs a two -thirds majority in the Federal Council and could become problematic without the support of Bavaria. By giving in Aiwangers, he not only secured his post, but also concluded the possibility that the free voters outside the government could take responsibility. Aiwanger now has to master the tricky situation in which its relationship with the CSU remains tense and the discussions about internal conflicts in the coalition will sail.
