New attempt for social housing in Villingen-Schwenningen!
In Villingen-Schwenningen it is bubbling again! After almost a year of rejection, the municipal council is planning a new advance to found a municipal housing association. The Free Voters and the SPD have submitted an application that aims at the development, establishment and management of social and affordable living space in the city.
The concept is based on the successful model of the Austrian capital Vienna, where the municipality itself builds and manages apartments. The application provides to develop projects that promote social mixing and prevent various income groups from living in separate residential areas. The financing is to be secured by a mixture of urban equity, loans as well as state and federal funding.
advance with hurdles
But the challenges are enormous! In November 2023, a similar proposal failed due to the required sum of 20 million euros, including almost 11 million euros in cash. Dirk Gläschig, City Councilor of Free Voters, is certain that a new attempt is necessary because private investors are not willing to take responsibility for the construction of social apartments.
The existing housing association Villingen-Schwenningen could possibly be integrated into the new company, but this must be checked legally. Managing Director Rainer Müldner emphasizes that social housing is only possible through the commitment of the municipalities. Cities like Stuttgart and Freiburg show how important it is that the municipalities themselves invest themselves. An amount of 20 million euros could take Villingen-Schwenningen a big step forward!
The initiators of the application, including Nicola Schurr from the SPD, hope for an energy -efficient and sustainable construction that quickly and efficiently covers the need for affordable housing. Time is urged, because rents have to remain affordable for the citizens!
