VfB Stuttgart is subject to Atalanta: Bitter defeat in the European Cup!
An exciting duel in the Champions League ended in a bitter defeat against Atalanta Bergamo for VfB Stuttgart. "They were ice cold in front of the goal and we were not. It was a difficult and disgusting opponent," summed up Chris Leader after the 0: 2 (0: 0). Despite the second defeat in the fourth game of the season, the winger also sees positive aspects: "You can take a lot of positive things with you from the game." But the reality is bitter for the Swabians, who have now slipped in 27th place of the 36 teams.
strong opponents and missed opportunities
The ex-Bundesliga professional Ademola Lookman and Nicolo Zaniolo made their goals that the Stuttgarters experienced an unfortunate evening in front of 60,000 spectators. Lookman scored the first goal in the 51st minute and already celebrated his eighth competitive goal of the season. Coach Sebastian Hoeneß said after the game: "I can't blame the team. It hurts, but this experiences are made at this level."
The Stuttgart team had been defensive for a long time, but the missed opportunities revenge. "We have defended everything away for a long time, but failed to put our chances in," said Mittelstädt. The Swabians now urgently need to collect points in order to qualify for the playoffs for the round of 16. Bergamo, on the other hand, remains unbeaten and has already scored 29 league hits this season.
The first half offered little highlights, but the tension was noticeable. Stuttgart had his best chance from Anthony Rouault, who gave a head. A possible penalty after a contact between El Bilal Touré and Bergamos Davide Zappacosta was not given by the referee. Shortly before the break, Deniz Undav had to be replaced for muscle complaints, which made the situation more difficult for VfB.
The second half then brought the decision: Joker Charles de Ketelaere served Lookman, who scored 0-1. Just a few minutes later, Zaniolo increased to 0: 2. Despite all the efforts, Stuttgart remained without compelling actions and must now wait for the first home win in the premier class for almost 15 years.
