Shaking floods in Bosnia: 16 dead and dramatic rescue campaigns!

In Bosnia-Herzegovina, devastating floods and landslides have called for a tragic tribute: at least 16 people lost their lives. This catastrophic incident occurred in the last two days and in particular presented the mountain village of Jablanica, about 30 kilometers northwest of Mostar, with considerable challenges.

Due to extraordinary rains, the rivers in the Balkans are threatening. In Jablanica there were dramatic scenes, as boulders, probably from a nearby quarry, fell onto the houses. These massive stones buried numerous residential buildings and led to an alarming situation for the residents of the region.

search action of the disaster protectors

The efforts of the disaster protection measures continue to focus in search of possible missing persons. Prime Minister Nermin Niksic reported on state television about the challenges that the emergency services have when coping with the situation. He corrected the originally specified number of fatalities from 18 to 16, since some cases had been registered several times. Of the 16 victims, 12 died in Jablanica alone, while the other four were killed in surrounding areas.

In the region, the country roads were temporarily impassable, and the water had washed up large amounts of earth under railway rails. In an agricultural area, disaster protectionists even had to evacuate people with boats to bring them to safety. This situation not only illustrates the severity of the natural disaster, but also the unpredictable risks that such extreme weather events can bring.

In addition to clarifying the floods, the police also have the cause of the accident in Jablanica. She examines to what extent the technical condition of the quarry has contributed to the tragedy. Niksic commented on the circumstances and found: "You don't need a special investigator to see that in this settlement they were victims of the collapse of the entire hill."

In the middle of this catastrophe, the situation in Bosnia-Herzegovina remains tense, since the disaster protectors work tirelessly to overcome the effects of the forces of nature. The aid measures focus on recognizing further dangerous situations and offering support to the affected people. The region is also waiting for the weather to be stabilized in order to be able to control the situation effectively.
