Deficit in Geising: 1.5 million euros due to lack of staff and energy costs!
In German Geisingen, the Haus Wartenberg nursing home is fighting with a significant deficit of 1.5 million euros in the 2023 balance sheet. The district administrator of the Black Forest Baar district, Sven Hintersseh, who also acts as the association chairman, announced this during a meeting of the special-purpose association. This includes a large facility with 340 nursing places in Geisingen and another house with 48 care places in Blumberg. The association also expects a negative result for 2024, albeit to a lesser extent.
The main reason for the financial difficulties lies in the insufficient utilization of the nursing places, which is partly due to an acute lack of personnel. This led to a station in Geisingen closed and the average occupancy fell below 80 percent. In contrast, the Eichberg house in Blumberg recently celebrated its 20th birthday with an occupancy of around 95 percent.
rising energy costs burden the balance sheet
Another essential factor that contributes to the deficit are the enormously increased energy costs, which have exploded as a result of the Ukraine War and CO2 taxation. While the expenses for water and energy were still 654,000 euros in 2022, they extinguished to 1.36 million euros in 2023. For 2024, even 1.22 million euros will be expected. Boris Schmid, the commercial managing director, explained that the existing combined heat and power plant becomes inefficient due to its age, so that a rethink is required.
To reduce energy expenditure, the special purpose association plans the construction of a modern Wartenberg house with 90 beds, which should be energetically up to date with the latest technology. The aim is to significantly reduce the heat requirement in order to achieve savings in the long term.
measures to improve the personnel situation
The personnel situation remains a challenge in parallel to the structural measures. The nursing managing director Torsten Fietze reported on the successful recruitment of new employees after numerous layoffs in 2023. However, the company was partly dependent on temporary workers in order to maintain home. He was optimistic that the need for temporary workers could belong to the past by the end of the year. The professional training positions at the technical school are now well occupied, but the finished nurses often move to larger communities, as more incentives are offered there. A key factor that is often overlooked is the lack of living opportunities for young, not yet mobile specialists. Fietze, however, expressed confidence: "As far as the personnel situation is concerned, we are on the right track."
At the meeting of the special -purpose association, elections were also carried out: Sven Hinterssehen was re -elected as association chairman and Martin Numberger as his representative. The developments in the Haus Wartenberg nursing home highlight the challenges in the care sector, but also underline hope for positive changes through targeted measures and investments.
