New law from 2025: How to properly dispose of old textiles!
A dramatic change in waste management is imminent: From January 1, 2025, old clothes and textiles may no longer be disposed of in residual waste. This requirement is the result of a new EU directive, which indicates a separate collection of textiles in order to increase recycling. However, the waste consultant Claudia Knopp from the Erben-pregnant recycling and waste disposal company (EVA) in the district of Weilheim-Schongau warns of confusion: "The separation notes for old clothes remain unchanged, but you still have to pay attention to what is coming in the container," she said, as well as on merkur.de is reported.
With the new rule, all textiles, whether broken or dirty, must be packed in old clothing containers instead of partially in the residual waste as before. This means a fundamental changeover for consumers and waste disposal companies. Helge Jesse, division manager in the district of Calw, expresses concerns: "The market for old textiles is already heavily stressed, and better management is required to be able to handle the increasing amount of inferior goods", as the cited. He is concerned that the new regulations could also complicate the situation for disposal.
The question is particularly problematic, what happens to heavily dirty textiles. In many regions, public recycling points are currently relieving the pressure, but it is not clear how these guidelines are concrete. Andrea Schmider from the Rottweil district office emphasizes the need for a higher degree of recycling and hopes for a harmonious implementation of the new requirements. At the same time, there are no clear alternatives for future disposal of heavily soiled or broken fabrics, which triggers concerns for many involved. With a change in the textile industry, a long -term solution is also required. Consumers are now required to deal with their textiles much more consciously in order to meet the requirements of the new guideline.
