Wolves in Baden-Württemberg: less cracks, more herd protection necessary!

The wolves in Baden-Württemberg continue to make headlines, but the situation has stabilized in recent months. According to current figures from the Ministry of the Environment, only 28 sheep and goats have been torn through wolves since the beginning of the year, with a total of 12 confirmed incidents, which represents a decline compared to previous years. The Rastatt region is particularly affected, where the Wolf GW852M is considered a “regular guest” and was able to tear sheep. Nevertheless, the frequency of its attacks is not sufficient for a shooting, since the legal requirements have not yet been met, such as reported.

A total of only three wolves are currently in South Baden-Württemberg, which have been living in the same area for over six months and are therefore considered to be sedentary. However, these developments are not without importance: wolf population in Germany is shown in a slow growth process. According to the Nature Conservation Association of Germany (NABU), the growth of the wolves has slowed down and does not reach the often alleged 30 percent annually. In addition, a new wolf in the southern Black Forest is proven, which now makes a fourth animal in the region at home. Despite occasional cracks, the interaction with people has so far been unproblematic, such as

Investments to protect the pasture animals

To support the pasture holders and increase the protection of their herds, the state of Baden-Württemberg has invested around 4.1 million euros in special fences and herd protection dogs this year. Wildlife expert Michael Herdtfelder emphasizes that it is increasingly likely that wolves could also settle in other areas of the country and form packs. The sightings of wolves have increased in the past twelve months, which indicates a dynamic development of this wildlife population.

In the federal comparison, 209 wolf packs are currently detectable in Germany, with the southwest still shaped by a rather small number of these animals. The return of the wolves is part of a complex natural process and could bring new challenges and opportunities for the region in the next few years.
