Safe paths for everyone: barrier -free conversion of Kreuzstraße begins!

in Freiburg begins on Monday, October 28th, the garden and civil engineering office (good) with extensive road construction work on Breisacher Strasse. This measure takes place between Eschholzstraße and the railway underpass, where the roadway is renovated and space for new wheel strips is created. The aim is to close the last bicycle traffic gap in this street. In addition to the wheel strips, the sidewalks and the “Kreuzstraße” bus stop are also being converted. The construction work is expected to continue until July 2025.

Particular attention is paid to safety for pedestrians. A new traffic light system will be installed in order to make the highly frequented intersection of Hugstetter Straße/Kreuzstraße. This happens after the existing zebra crossing has been often disregarded by drivers. The renovation also includes the installation of special bus borders, which enable the same height access to the buses. All sidewalks in the affected area are designed to be barrier -free, which means that access to persons restricted mobility is to be significantly improved.

extensive measures to calm traffic

The new wheel strips that are created inland are intended to create more secure conditions for cyclists. The narrow sidewalk has been significantly widened. From Fedderstrasse, the curb is moved to enable bilateral wheel strips to Kreuzstrasse. Interestingly, the bike guide east of Kreuzstraße seamlessly follows a railway underpass in Breisacher Strasse, which was converted two years ago. All wheel crossings are marked, which ensures additional visibility and thus security.

The work is financed by a budget of around 1,050,000 euros. The "Kreuzstraße" bus stop is not served during the construction period, and Breisacher Strasse is blocked on one side. In this section, a one -way regulation towards the city applies. Deadings lead via Friedhofstrasse, Rennweg and Stefan-Meier-Straße as well as via the B31.

For cycling, the diversion is output via the Mathilden and Lehener Straße. However, pedestrians can pass the construction site at any time, according to the corresponding construction site signage. The estate asks for understanding for the inconvenience that goes hand in hand with the construction work.

These comprehensive renovation work is an important step to improve the transport infrastructure in Freiburg and to increase the safety of all road users - on foot, by bike or in the car.
