Mega construction site in Zell-Weierbach: 75,000 euros for business assistance!
The city area of Offenburg will take a big step towards support for local business in the coming years, as a new construction site support fund has been set up. This initiative, which remains in force by the end of 2029, stipulates that a total of 75,000 euros are available to relieve local companies during construction work. The impetus for this decision came from Zell-Weierbach, where an important construction site is planned in May 2025.
The idea behind this fund is to support business that could fight with a decline in customer frequency during urban construction projects. The city would like to ensure that these shops continue to exist during and after the construction work. In a press conference, Mayor Marco Steffens emphasized that it was in the interests of the city to protect and promote the business world in Offenburg.
Details on the support fund
At a meeting of the local council on Monday evening, it was decided to extend the fund to the entire city. This multi -year program is monitored by a neutral body, consisting of volunteer tax consultants and auditors, to ensure that the means are used fairly. The decision as to whether financial support is granted is the responsibility of this committee.
The background for the expansion of the fund was a request from Zell-Weierbach, where the renewal of the Talbach passage in the center of town brings a significant construction site. Mayor Willi Wunsch and the local council have therefore campaigned for the support of the shops based there to secure their economic continuation during this time.
The "prologue" to the upcoming construction site is already that the supply lines were laid from the middle of the street to the edge in order to clear the actual construction site. Mayor Oliver Martini explained that the main work for the desolation of the Talbach can only begin as soon as all water law permits are available. This approval has now been granted, so that the next planning steps and the tender procedure can now be addressed. The work should then start in May 2025 and are scheduled for around 18 months.
The expansion of the support fund is a sign of the city of Offenburg that it is willing to actively tackle the challenges that are associated with major construction projects. It remains to be seen how this offer of help is used by the affected shops and whether they succeed in cushioning the economic stress during the construction work.
