Human milk bank in Offenburg: 257 liters donated for premature babies!
An impressive success for the Ortenau Children's Clinic in Offenburg! Within a year of setting up their human milk bank, 32 generous women donated an incredible 257 liters of breast milk. This valuable donation primarily benefits premature babies and newborns and ensures that no baby is left without a vital source of nutrition. Patrick Gerner, the head of the clinic, is enthusiastic: “We are very pleased about the successful establishment of the human milk bank and the large number of donors, whom we would like to thank very much for their cooperation.”
The importance of this initiative cannot be overstated! Breast milk is not only the healthiest nutrition for newborns, it also protects against serious complications and has a preventive effect against allergies, asthma and obesity. Last year, a need for 51 liters of donated human milk was identified and, fortunately, no mother of premature babies declined the offer. The clinic not only cares for its own newborns, but also helps other clinics in the region that do not have their own human milk bank.
A network of hope
The fundraising campaign is part of a larger network of human milk banks in Baden-Württemberg. Mothers who produce more milk after giving birth than they need for their own baby can donate their milk anonymously. Before donation, they are screened for risk factors and diseases to ensure the safety of the donor milk. “There should be around 150 to 200 milliliters of milk left per day,” explains Katrin Litterst, a specialist in pediatric intensive care. Mothers can easily express the milk at home, freeze it and deliver it to the clinic.
The demand for breast milk often exceeds the supply, making donations even more valuable. The donor milk is free for the parents of the recipient children, which underlines the importance of this altruistic initiative. The human milk bank at the Ortenau Children's Hospital is not only a ray of hope for the little patients, but also a sign of solidarity and support in the community.
