Frauenmilchbank in Offenburg: 257 liters donated for premature babies!
Offenburg, Deutschland - an impressive success for the Ortenau children's clinic in Offenburg! Within a year after the establishment of their women's milk bench, 32 generous women donated an incredible 257 liter breast milk. This valuable donation primarily benefits early and newborns and ensures that no baby remains without the vital food source. Patrick Gerner, the head of the clinic, is enthusiastic: "We are very happy about the successful structure of the Frauenmilchbank and the large number of donors, whom we would like to thank for the cooperation."
The importance of this initiative cannot be assessed high enough! Breast milk is not only the healthiest diet for newborns, it also protects against serious complications and has a preventive effect against allergies, asthma and obesity. Last year a need of 51 liters of donated women's milk was found, and fortunately no mother of premature babies rejected the offer. The clinic not only provides its own newborns, but also helps other clinics in the region that do not have its own women's milk bench.
a network of hope
The fundraising campaign is part of a larger network of women's milk banks in Baden-Württemberg. Mothers who produce more milk after birth than they need for their own baby can donate their milk anonymously. Before the donation, you will be examined for risk factors and diseases to ensure the safety of donor milk. "There should be around 150 to 200 milliliters of milk a day," explains Katrin Litterst, a specialist in pediatric intensive care. The mothers can pump the milk comfortably at home, freeze and hand in in the clinic.
The demand for breast milk often exceeds the supply, which makes donations all the more valuable. For the parents of the recipient children, donor milk is free of charge, which underlines the importance of this altruistic initiative. The women's milk bench of the Ortenau children's clinic is therefore not only a ray of hope for the small patients, but also a sign of solidarity and support in the community.
