Vesperkirche opens doors: warm lunch for the needy in Mannheim

on Sunday, January 12, 2025, the 28th Mannheim Vesperkirche began in the City Church of Concordia. By February 9, around 600 people will be supplied with a warm lunch every day. This project not only offers a nutritious meal, but also aims to offer the guests warmth and care. Pastor Ilka Sobottke emphasized in her sermon that only a fraction of those in need could be achieved.

The Vesperkirche takes place annually in the City Church of Concordia and offers an open dining room for both the needy and non-needy people. Lunch is served at covered tables and includes coffee, cake and a vesand bag. A solidarity contribution of 5 euros per food is requested, alternatively an amount of 1 euro can be paid or the meal is offered free of charge for people who have no money. A submission of a social ID or similar documents is not required.

commitment and support

over 600 volunteers, including students, confi groups and company teams, support the Vesperkirche. This important social institution is financed by numerous donations and a strong network of partners, whereby the annual costs are more than 180,000 euros. Every day, up to 600 guests visit the Vesperkirche, which started in 1998 with about 60 guests a day.

employees of the diaconal work also offer social counseling and daily devotions are designed by various Mannheim communities. A thematic preacher series takes place during the Vesperkirche on Sundays.
