Silver bay leaves: Germany's athletes celebrate glamorous success!
Hannover, Deutschland - It was a glamorous evening for the German athletes! At the awarding of the silver laurel leaf, the highest state award for outstanding achievements in German sport, the stars of the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Mannheim were honored. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier presented the awards to 75 athletes and 84 athletes who shone at the Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games, as well as 15 athletes from the Deaflympic Winter Games 2024.
The silver laurel leaf that has been awarded since 1950 is a symbol of sporty excellence. Particularly noteworthy is the first joint honor of the medalists of the Olympic and Paralympic Games by Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker in 1993. This year, athletes from various disciplines were awarded for their outstanding achievements, including basketball, badminton, beach volleyball and many more.
The winners in the spotlight
The basketball players Svenja Brunckhorst, Sonja Greinacher, Elisa Mevius and Stella Marie Reichert are among the honored athletes, all of whom won gold in 3 × 3 basketball. Thomas Wandschneider was also able to shine with a bronze medal in badminton. Nils Ehlers and Clemens Wickler won silver in beach volleyball. The football women, including Nicole Anyomi and Alexandra Popp, were celebrated for their bronze medals. The men's team with numerous silver medals was also strongly represented in handball.The variety of sports that are represented shows the strength of German sport. From judo to cycling to swimming - the list of outstanding services is long and impressive. The event was not only a celebration of success, but also a sign of recognition for the tireless efforts and the dedication of the athletes who represent Germany in international competitions.
