Südstadt blooms: 75% of the new residential projects are about to be completed!

As part of the district development in the southern part of Heidelberg, significant progress was made in 2024. According to a current announcement by the city administration, 75% of the conversion areas Mark-Twain-Village and Campbell Barracks have already been completed. The city has set itself ambitious goals in order to achieve further milestones by 2027 and to promote sustainable development.

A central project is the completion of the “Campbell Barracks” district, which was completed in July 2024. The area extends over 4.6 hectares and offers space for around 450 new residents. The population of the southern town has increased to over 2,500 inhabitants, which corresponds to an increase of 17.8% since June 2023. Almost 2,000 people have moved since the end of 2018, with the women's quota being around 53% and also 53% of the new residents come from Heidelberg.

Sustainable infrastructure and housing construction

The demographic structure shows a high proportion of children and adolescents of 29.8%, while the average age of the population is 30.6 years. In 2024, an additional 42 apartments were completed in the housing construction, which increases the total number to around 1,200 apartments. 70% of the apartments are encouraged or price -stretched, while 30% are freely financed.

The infrastructure measures include the creation of 7 daycare centers with a total of 175 crèche and 350 kindergarten places as well as 18 places in day care. Play and open spaces as well as cultural offers such as the "Chapel" and the "Karlstorbahnhof" also belong to the new Südstadt.

Progress in the southern part of the city was also recognized with the nomination for the German Urban Development Award 2025. This price is awarded from over 80 applications, which puts the project in a prestigious context. The application for the urban development price is possible until October 15, 2024, as on the website stedtebaupreis.de is noted.

In addition, the area of economic development will continue to promote, for example with the opening of the cultural and creative management center Marlene 42, which is to be opened in April 2025 on an area of 3,000 square meters. A combined foot and cycle path system on Adelheid-Steinmann-Straße is also planned to improve mobility in the region. As part of the “The other Park” project, 220 new trees are added for greening.
