Heidelberg restricts e-scooter: only 1,200 left!

Heidelberg, Deutschland - Heidelberg pulls the ripcord! The city plans to drastically restrict the range of rentable e-scooters. On Thursday at 5:30 p.m., the local council will vote on a new concept that only allows three providers with a maximum of 1,200 e-scooters. The regulation aims to tame the chaos through wildly parked e-scooters that hinders pedestrians, cyclists and wheelchair users. A spokesman for the city confirmed the plans and emphasized the need for these measures.

E-scooters in the university city have been an integral part of the cityscape in the university town since 2019. There are currently around 1,700 e-scooters from four providers. In order to improve the Situation, eight storage areas have already been set up as a pilot project in the old town. The city administration speaks of an improvement in traffic safety and the cityscape. But that's not enough! In the coming years, up to 90 storage areas in the core zone are to be created, with costs of up to 135,000 euros, which are to be covered by the providers.

technical requirements for providers

The new regulations also bring technical requirements. Providers must install sensors that report fallen e-scooters. Users who park their vehicles outside the designated areas cannot complete the rental process and still have to pay. Heidelberg is not only with these measures; The German Association of Cities and Municipalities has already found that many municipalities introduce similar quotas and driving prohibition zones for e-scooters. In Paris, rental scooters have even been completely banned since last year after 89 percent of the citizens voted in a survey.
