Heidelberg is preparing for the winter: security on 500 km of roads!

Heidelberg, Deutschland - Heidelberg is ready for winter! Despite the currently mild temperatures, the city has made all the preparations to combat ice and smoothness. From November 14th to April 10, 2025, urban winter services will be tirelessly deployed to keep the streets and paths safely. From 4 a.m. until 10 p.m. in the evening, snow and smoothness will be scattered and cleared. Working until 1 a.m. on working days, while the teams are active until 4 a.m. on weekends.

An impressive team of 140 employees from various urban offices will ensure that around 500 kilometers of roads and paths are released from snow. The city is well equipped with 18 clearing vehicles and 14 small rooms for cycle paths. Heidelberg is already storing 2,000 tons of salt and 20 tons of split to be prepared for all weather conditions. Security and environmental protection are top priority!

To protect the environment, strict rules apply for the use of stray. Only dulling material such as sand or grit is allowed, while road salt may only be used in exceptional weather conditions. The amount is limited to a maximum of 20 grams per square meter to avoid environmental damage. Special mixtures may be used for dangerous areas such as stairs and steep road sections, but with strict quantity restrictions. These measures guarantee both the security of the citizens and the protection of the environment during the cold months!
