ZF secures large order: revolutionary brake systems for millions of vehicles
The automotive supplier ZF Friedrichshafen has received a major large order for the delivery of electromechanical brake systems. This was announced as part of the CES 2025 in Las Vegas. The contract includes the equipment of almost five million vehicles with ZF brake systems, with the customer being a "worldwide leading vehicle manufacturer", but the name of which was not mentioned.
The order includes a variety of innovative technologies, including the electromechanical brake, the by-wire technology on the rear wheels and the integrated brake control (Integrated Brake Control, IBC). In addition, conventional brake calipers on the front axle are integrated into the overall concept. The new brake system is described as hybrid and thus offers manufacturers more flexibility. ZF also sees the electromechanical brake as an important part of the software -defined vehicle.
innovative technologies and security aspects
The by-wire technology that is used in the new brake system enables potentially autonomous brakes and steering in critical situations. The use of electric motors creates the braking force, while the brake signals are electrically transmitted from the pedal to the electric motor. This means that the system works without hydraulics and brake fluid, which makes it much more efficient.
In January 2024, the divisions "active security technology" and "car chassis technology" were merged with ZF in order to strengthen productivity and innovative strength in the field of vehicle security. Peter Holdmann, board member at ZF, was positive about the current strategy of the company, which aims to further expand the position as a leading supplier in the automotive industry.
In addition, the customer order also contains ZFS electro-mechanical ball circulation steering, which represents progressive steering technology. This combination of modern braking technology, traditional brake systems and innovative steering architecture continues to position ZF as a market leader who has the potential to significantly influence the automotive industry.
The new investments and technologies show ZF’s vision for transformation towards software -defined vehicles, which could play an important role in the mobility landscape in the future. ZF has gained extensive experience in the development of brake systems in the past 50 years and has made over three billion braking components, which makes the company one of the most reliable suppliers in the global automotive industry.
