New Year's swimming in Lake Constance: Brave divers defy icy water

Friedrichshafen, Deutschland - On January 6, 2025, the traditional New Year's swimming of the DLRG in Lake Constance took place for the 54th time. The event started on time at 1 p.m. and attracted numerous spectators who cheered on the swimmers despite the slightly foggy weather. This year, seven participants took part in the event, including active divers, flowers of the DLRG and a member of the diving club Friedrichshafen.

The route of about 1.5 kilometers led from the castle church to the BSB port. Although the water temperature was pleasantly cool at only five degrees Celsius, the participants were well prepared. They wore modern wetsuits, diving masks, snorkeling and fins. The swimmers have not needed any special preparation for the event for year and day. Wolfgang Nickl, the DLRG lecture manager diving, took part in this event for the 43rd time and reached the Moleturm together with the other swimmers around 1:30 p.m. They were accompanied by a rowboat and a motor lifeboat of the DLRG.

Review of past New Year swimming

The swimmers, as this year, were equipped with modern equipment. Among the participants were active divers, flow rescuers and a member of the diving sports club Friedrichshafen. In the past edition, two swimmers had to cancel the race prematurely and were brought to the finish line with a dinghy. Wolfgang Nickl was also there this year, for the 41st time. The participation of four newcomers, including two young women, was new. The swimmers reached their destination at the Moleturm around 1.30 p.m.
