Friedrichshafen: Autonomous buses continue - tested until 2025!

Friedrichshafen, Deutschland - Baden-Württemberg Revolution in local transport: Autonomous buses in Friedrichshafen remain at the wheel!

The future of local public transport picks up speed! In Friedrichshafen, the groundbreaking “Rabus” project will be extended by the end of June 2025. After a successful first test phase, citizens can continue to sit in the self -driving minibuses. While Mannheim has to end the experiment due to road closures and temporary stops, Friedrichshafen remains at the pulse of time and relies on innovative mobility.

A look at the technology

The autonomous minibuses, which offer space for up to ten passengers, have been in both cities since October. You drive independently, but with a security driver on board. Transport Minister Winfried Hermann (Greens) emphasizes the importance of these tests: "With the knowledge gained in testing the technology, we can create a basis for the nationwide use of autonomous shuttles." The buses will not only be traveling within the city, but also in the surrounding area with speeds of at least 60 km/h, which in particular could better connect rural regions to public transport.

The best thing remains for passengers: the trips are free! Over 1,450 people have already registered for the first test drives. The state of Baden-Württemberg supports the project with almost 14 million euros, and there is another 1.8 million euros for the extension. A real progress for the mobility of the future!
