Wine tasting in the covered wagon: Experience taste and history up close!
A special event recently took place in the vineyards of Keltern, in which wine lovers had the opportunity to taste different wines and learn more about the region. The event was organized by Melanie Frank and Alexander Deeg, the managing directors of the Kelternwein winery. The tour for a group of wine lovers began with a festive reception in which sparkling wine was served.
The day started with a valuable insight into the local history. Andreas Ratz from the home care and art working group led the participants through the local museum in Ellmendingen, where the rich past of the region was clearly presented. The historical wine press, which is more than 500 years old, is just an example of the cultural heritage of the growing area, in which the Celts already lived and later introduced the Romans to viticulture.
drive in the covered wagon through the vineyards
After the informative tour of the museum, with which many historical sight was admired, the vineyard tour started with an impressive tractor that pulled an almost ten meter long covered wagon. The participants enjoyed the journey on narrow paths to the vineyards of Ellmendigen and Dietlingen, in bright weather and with a breathtaking view of the surrounding vineyards and the northern Black Forest.
The first stop of the tasting offered the guests the opportunity to try the rivan, followed by a stronger Grauburgunder. Melanie Frank gave valuable tips on the wine tasting: "First smell, then swirl and only taste". However, this professional hint was only a small part of the event, which was primarily shaped by conviviality and joy of wine.
The Kelternwein winery produces a total of 30 different types of wine on an area of around ten hectares. A highlight of the tasting was the Pinot Noir Weißherbst, a real pride of the winery. But the Schwarzriesling, the flagship of the production, was also very well received.
weather conditions and their effects on viticulture
Despite the pleasing event, the challenge of the current year did not go unmentioned. Melanie Frank spoke openly about the difficult conditions caused by the frost in April. "Our harvest was only around 15 percent of the usual annual profit," she said. Like many winemakers in the region, the Kelternwein winery also suffered from the weather, which led to considerable crop failures.
Nevertheless, the maiden voyage through the vineyards was a complete success and not only offered the participants an insight into wine production, but also the opportunity to get to know the unique culture and wines of the region. The next opportunity for a vineyard basic trip will be offered on October 18.
