Nuclear waste search: Enzkreis has reason to hope!
Nuclear waste search: Enzkreis has reason to hope!
Enzkreis, Deutschland - Berlin/Enzkreis. A dramatic turning point in the search for a nuclear waste end camp: The Federal Society for Final storage (BGE) has excluded several areas in Baden-Württemberg as unsuitable! This could be relieved for many citizens in the region. The scientists in particular took a strip between Bad Herrenalb, Pforzheim and Vaihingen an der Enz as well as adjacent circles such as Neckar-Odenwald and Main-Tauber.
But that's not all! Parts of the district of Constance and the region between Tuttlingen and Emmendingen are now now from the table as locations for the dangerous waste. This decision also affects a regional band from Münsingen to Blaubeuren to the districts of Heidenheim and Ostalb. In the meantime, many other regions, such as the Rhine level, have to be examined even more precisely to clarify their suitability.
44 percent of the area of Germany remain in the race
But don't panic! Around 44 percent of the total country area in Germany continues to have potential candidates for a repository, since no final evaluation has yet been made by experts. Compared to the first report from 2020, the area that comes into the closer selection decreased by around ten percent. This decisive information was published on the interactive map of the BGE.
The BGE carries out extensive security examinations to determine the best geological conditions for the underground storage of highly radioactive garbage. A final location is to be found by 2050 to store the 27,000 cubic meters of highly radioactive waste, which dates from over 60 years of nuclear power. The dangerous garbage is currently kept in 16 above -ground intermediate camps in different federal states. A place has to be found that is safe for a million years, because the nuclear waste shines for hundreds of thousands of years!
