After flooding: Meckenbeuren is fighting for effective flood protection!

Meckenbeuren, Deutschland - in Meckenbeuren there is great uncertainty after the devastating flood situation in June this year. Affected residents and farmers have numerous questions about flood protection and are urgently looking for answers. The flood, which was referred to as the "historical wave", has affected not only houses, but also schools and public institutions. Construction dryers have recently been used to eliminate damage to buildings and schools, but the concerns of the citizens remain.

"The heating has been working again at school since the beginning of October, and the showers in the Karl Brugger hall have hot water again," the community informs. But many residents who have given up their basements and are waiting for possible help are dissatisfied with the solutions of the authorities. In a recent discussion round of the CDU local group with a member of the state parliament, Raimund Haser was clearly shown that the needs of the citizens are still ignored.

flood protection as a common task

haser commented on the responsibility of municipalities in flood protection and emphasized that the willingness to work is necessary. "Flood protection only goes together," he said. Nevertheless, he complained that the communities often pursue individual solutions, which only shifts the problems from one place to the next. In order to improve the situation sustainably, coordinated planning and implementation is necessary.

"The experiences from the last flood wave must incorporate into improved risk management," the MP continued. However, he finds that the creation of flood areas encountered resistance on many land. Often owners are not willing to provide their space for these purposes. Additional conflicts arise for plan construction projects in the nature and environmental protection area.

Another problem that complicates the situation is the lack of personnel in the responsible authorities. The MP announced that 18 new administrative offices should be created in order to process the necessary permits more efficiently. But those affected demand more than just bureaucratic solutions.

farmers express displeasure about conditions

The farmers from the region are particularly frustrated by the current water conditions. Michael Friedrich, a resident, draws attention to the fact that the fields are apparently no longer able to absorb water, and believes that inadequate maintenance of the trenches is responsible. "Our fields no longer have a water absorption capacity," he describes the critical situation.

A colleague, Dietmar Rist, urges that instead of new administrative staff, more should be used to maintain the infrastructure. "It is better to clean the trenches," he says, criticizing the overgrowth of the water through vegetative rashes.

But not only the farmers feel abandoned by the responsible positions. Many private individuals are also looking for support and are frustrated with the slow damage regulation. "So far, only three applications have come to the exam," reports Stefan Maenner, another affected person.

A real estate owner has targeted the lack of capacity of the sewer. It demands that larger systems be created to prevent the channels from overflowing in heavy rains. In such a critical situation, the mayor, Georg Schellinger, demands: "We can only build channels that work under normal circumstances." Without technical improvements in the infrastructure, however, it will be difficult to actually relieve the citizens.

The situation remains complicated: ditches, channels and retention areas are the focus of the discussions, while the residents continue to urge to finally find solutions for their fears and the damage incurred. It remains to be seen which measures are actually taken in order to not only solve the acute problems, but also to ensure flood protection for the future.
