Young people discover the exciting world of nursing professions on Lake Constance!

On the "Day of Care", around 370 young people from four schools in the Lake Constance district visited the Friedrichshafen Clinic. This event offered young people an exciting introduction to the world of nursing professions, which was led by prospective nurses as well as anesthesia and operating assistants. Educational stations enabled the students to actively experience and discover various aspects of care.

A central focus of this event was on the subject of "Decision for life: organ donation in focus". There were informative lectures and the possibility of registering directly on site as part of a typing campaign of the DKMS.

Practical insights into nursing professions

Christoph Ley, a practice teacher at the MCB, was pleased to comment on the high number of interested students: "Such a day as today is very important. We have to draw attention to ourselves and arouse interest in nursing professions for young people." At the same time, the day offered the opportunity to explore different facilities, including the Mukiz (mother-child center), in which the special care of early and newborns was presented. Pupils and Dominik enthusiastically reported on their experiences, who strengthened their career wishes to become a doctor.

The practical experience was particularly impressive for many young people, for example when Dominik could be explained to the various operating instruments by two OTAs, which were still in training. Meanwhile, his classmate Amro sat on the operating table and experienced modern anesthesia technologies up close.

Vital value measurement and practical skills

In the foyer of the clinic, the focus was on the vital values: pulse, blood pressure, oxygen saturation and body temperature were measured by the young people. The students of the Diakonisches Institute led these measurements to a highly concentrated manner and learned a lot about their own bodies. Practice teacher Peter Adumekwe explained which blood pressure measure is considered perfect: "127 to 80 - that is perfect. You are still young."

Practical exercises were also part of the program. Practice teacher Margit Lorenz demonstrated how an infusion works and invited the students to try in spraying themselves, all of which were handled hygienic and safely.

Organ donation and ethical questions

Another interesting point was the lectures on organ donations. The organ receiver Reinhard Beck shared his moving story with the students. He has been living with a new heart for six years and did not take this gift as a matter of course. "It's great that something like this is at all possible," he emphasized and spoke with gratitude about his experience.

Diacon Dr. Thomas Borne, who also spoke about the ethical questions about organ donation, asked the important question "When is a person dead?" in the room that must be viewed from different perspectives.

In connection with organ donation, the typing campaign of the DKMS was also a complete success. Young people and employees of the clinic had the opportunity to simply be typed by cotton swabs. Melanie Reisach, spokeswoman for the DKMS, was enthusiastic: "That was much more than we hoped for." Justus Rehkugler, a real donor, told interested students how a stem cell donation works and how important it is for the rescue of life.

For the young people, this day was not only informative, but also inspiring, since they were able to experience the versatility and possibilities within the nursing professions. The Friedrichshafen Clinic offers such an opportunity to promote interest in nursing professions and to gain the future generation for these important medical professions.
