Liebherr shocked with retreat: What happens to the IGI now?

In a surprising turn, the renowned Liebherr company announced a few days ago that it no longer needed space in the planned inter-municipal industrial area (IGI) in Biberach. This decision caused confusion because the city council had approved a development of the area in June. City Councilor Ralph Heidenreich (Olli) asked the important question in the last meeting of the local council: How is the IGI going now?

According to Heidenreich, there are contractual regulations that state that the city must pay the development agency for compensation that has already been incurred. In addition, Liebherr, should the company withdraw, resign its rights and obligations to the Handtmann company. This raises questions: Have already been created and is now a turn of Handtmann to take the next steps?

Withdrawal from Liebherr unexpectedly

First Mayor Ralf Miller confirmed the explanations of Heidenreich and explained that the news about the withdrawal of Liebherr surprised everyone involved. "A week earlier we still had a working group that dealt with the plans," said Miller. In his opinion, he also expressed that the agreement that was made to plan the IGI has not yet been dissolved and is currently unclear how quickly this could happen. Questions about costs already incurred also remained unanswered.

The next steps will be discussed in the IGI Board of Directors in the coming weeks. A central topic will be the transfer of the development to Handtmann if Liebherr should actually withdraw from his projects.

Liebherr, the manufacturer of tower shooting and mobile construction cranes, abandoned his plan to buy land in the IGI about two weeks ago. Instead, the focus is on the further development of the existing location on Memminger Strasse in Biberach. This decision has been made against the background of the current economic framework that seems challenging for the company.
