Deportations to Syria: Interior Minister Karner urges quick solutions!
Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) informed about the upcoming deportations of Syrian refugees from Austria in a press conference in Brussels. According to Karner, some European countries, including Austria, have suspended their asylum procedures for Syrian refugees who fled the Assad regime. He emphasized that there would be no mass portations, but you have to be active. "It doesn't work either that we put our hands in our laps and wait," said Karner. In advance, Chancellor Karl Nehammer Karner had commissioned Karner to review all ongoing asylum applications in order to re -evaluate the security situation in Syria.
planning of further deportations
Karner plans to carry out deportations to Afghanistan and Syria this year. In an interview with the "Bild am Sonntag", he made it clear that he saw no reason to not bring Taliban back to their home country. Such deportations are currently legally problematic due to serious human rights violations during the civil war in Syria. Nevertheless, he emphasized the need to speak openly about the return of endangers and offenders to Syria, especially in regions such as Damascus - but not for women and children, according to his clear announcement. Karner also expressed that social support for migrants at European level should be adapted and reduced in order not to offer incentive for migration, as the press states.
The talks about the return of refugees show the growing tensions within the EU in dealing with migration. After all, around 40,000 Syrians in Austria have received asylum in the past five years alone and now the question is on how to deal with this increasing number. Karner underlined that the topic is of the utmost importance for all EU member states, in particular, since Germany has already taken steps to carry out joint deportations, as was the case in previous years. Close cooperation within the EU is obviously important to the minister to find a common and effective solution.
