950 years of albungs: a village in the festive light of history!
Albungen, Deutschland - The district of Eschwege is celebrating a remarkable anniversary this year: from June 13th to 15th, 2025, albungs celebrate its 950th anniversary. For the first time, the place was mentioned as Albungun in 1075 in the Gau Germark. This means that albungs are 101 years younger than the city of Eschwege.
Historically, albungs until around 1300 were in the sphere of influence of the Counts of Bilstein before the Messrs of Diede zum Fürstenstein took control. In 1972 the district was incorporated into Eschwege in the course of the area reform. Today albungs have around 270 inhabitants and is the smallest district of Eschwege. Compared to the past, the population has changed over the centuries: 237 inhabitants lived there in 1750, in 1939 it was 331, after the Second World War even 628, while only 363 inhabitants were registered in 2012. The location of Albungen near the Werra and on a historic railway line that has been in operation since 1877 has made the place conveniently. Despite these advantages, albungs suffer regularly from floods, which in the past led to considerable damage. The inauguration of flood protection measures, such as a pedestrian bridge in 1963 and a flood trough that was completed in 2016, helps to minimize floods. The Article Rundschau reports that damage to houses and land now belongs to the past.
An annual highlight in the village is the Albunger Dorf-Flohmarkt, which attracts thousands of visitors every August. On December 31, 2023, Albungen had a total of 275 inhabitants as the main residence.
