Tchibo starts sustainability week: coffee enjoyment for the environment!
Mariahilfer Straße 34, 1060 Wien, Österreich - by June 7, 2025, Tchibo organizes a sustainability week in selected branches that aims to bring customers closer to the principles of the circular economy and sustainable coffee consumption. According to Oe24 comprises the Initiative three national sustainability projects: The introduction of recyclable Coffee capsules, the use of reusable recup pawns for coffee to go with an increased environmental bonus and re-use actions for products.
Paul Unterluggauer, Managing Director of Tchibo Austria, emphasizes the important role that customers play as part of these sustainability efforts. In addition, the opportunity to take part in upcycling workshops is offered in the Tchibo branches. These workshops take place on the following days and locations:
- 26. May in Vienna, Mariahilfer Straße 34
- 27. May in Baden, Archduke-Rainer-Ring 5
- 28. May in Linz, Pluscity
Customers also have the opportunity to return used cafissimo capsules and QBO cubes in all 120 Tchibo/Eduscho branches. Tchibo provides free recycling collecting bags, which are made from the same material as the capsules and grasp up to 60 capsules. The collected coffee capsules are processed into plastic granulate, while the coffee grounds are converted into energy or plant fertilizer. In addition, there will be a price reduction of 50 cents on coffee by June 7th if a recup reusable cup is used.
outlook on upcoming initiatives
From July 7, 2025, Tchibo will start a new Re-Uuse campaign in collaboration with Re-Form Austria. Customers should be able to hand in well-preserved skirts and clothes in the Tchibo branches, which should further promote the sustainable handling of clothing.
An important aspect in the discussion about sustainability is also the packaging. Ernst Krottendorfer emphasizes in a report by GS1 Austria that jointly recommended standards are necessary for the design of Circular Packaging in order to achieve the specified recycling rates. The need for a uniform understanding of recyclability and sustainability is also emphasized. The FH Campus Vienna benefits from cooperation with ECR Austria to better understand practical experiences and challenges from industry.
The packaging law, as explained by pwc , provides for the introduction of a central point for the packaging register. Manufacturers must register in the LUCID system, which ensures transparency in relation to the manufacturer's product responsibility. The new regulations lead to a greater control of the dual systems about compliance with the recycling rates. Violations can be punished with fines of up to 200,000 euros, which further exacerbates the requirements for the packaging industry.
These developments in the sustainability week of Tchibo and the simultaneous efforts to show standardized and sustainable packaging solutions that a rethink in the consumer society is necessary and possible.
