Kabö calls for a quick implementation of EU guidelines for platform workers!
Wien, Österreich - The EU has taken a pioneering step to improve working conditions for platform employees. On March 21, 2025, the Catholic employee movement Austria (KABÖ) called for the rapid implementation of the new guidelines. These were decided in the EU Parliament in April 2024 to ensure the protection and safety of people who work on digital platforms. Platform work includes services such as food deliveries, translations and many more. Kabö-Bundessersorger Karl Everwelt explained that passable working conditions are urgently necessary for the people concerned, since many suffer from unsustainable conditions.
In particular, the KABÖ criticized the example of the Lieferando food service, which had announced that it would terminate around 600 employees. This forces the drivers to work as a self -employed employee, which actually amounts to a lack of job security. "There is no reward for each order, vacation entitlement and continued wages in the event of illness," says Everoll. This development is in direct contradiction to the new EU requirements, which are now imposed on the Member States, to introduce effective measures to combat sham self-employment. This guideline aims to ensure just employment status and to protect the employees from unfair algorithm management, as the report of the European Parliament shows.
important regulations for platform work
With 554 votes in 56 votes against, the EU Parliament has passed fundamental regulations that are intended to ensure that the employment status of platform workers: inside is correctly determined. The new regulation introduces an assumption of an employment relationship that is legally binding for the platforms that they have to prove that they have to prove. This historical agreement is expected to provide up to 40 million platform employees in the EU access to fair working conditions. The rapporteur Elisabetta Gualmini emphasized that the regulation would promote the protection of the rights and dignity of workers and at the same time prevent unfair competitive conditions, such as Europarl.europa.eu reported.
The precautions for improving data protection and transparency also emphasize that certain sensitive data from platform workers may no longer be processed, which should be additional protection for the employees. Now it is up to the individual Member States to transfer the new provisions to national law within two years in order to meet the needs of the modern world of work.
