Horn sled races in Garmisch: Ex-sports stars bring excitement into the race!
The traditional horn sled race took place in Garmisch-Partenkirchen on Epiphany. A total of 63 teams started at the event, which was held as a 45th Bavarian championship in Hornschlitten. Including prominent participants such as ex-bobber André Lange and ex-ski jumper Sven Hannawald, who jointly took 24th place out of 71 male teams. André Lange, who won four gold at the Olympic Games, and Sven Hannawald, the ski flight world champion and Olympic gold medalist in Salt Lake City, convinced the audience with their participation.
This year it was possible for the first time in nine years to open the entire route of 1,100 meters because there was enough snow. The Hornschlittenverein Partenkirchen had 800 cubic meters delivered extra snow. The weather conditions were also favorable, so there was no danger to the event. The route runs between Partnachalm and Wildenau and has some steep sections. The “Erie-Stich” with a gradient of up to 25 percent is particularly challenging. The top speed can reach up to 100 km/h, such as Merkur.de

The race was also overshadowed by difficulties. There were several interruptions, including an accident in which one participant injured a shoulder. Despite these incidents, the race track is always prepared and secured. Times are processed by Computer with an accuracy of hundredths of a second. Historically, horn sleds were once used by mountain farmers to transport hay or wood, and this cultural heritage is recognized by today's event, such as reported.
