Science under pressure: Art universities warn against right -wing extremists!

Laimgrubengasse 10, 1060 Wien, Österreich - On January 17, 2025, the Senate Chairman of the Austrian Art Universities revoked their deep concern about the upcoming political changes in Austria. This is closely related to the possible takeover of government by the FPÖ, which in their opinion could have a direct impact on the freedom and diversity of scientific and artistic research. In a clear appeal, the chairperson warned that right -wing extremist positions could threaten the basics of academic freedom and undermine a public discourse. They confirmed that all universities have to be based on an open, social and cultural understanding in order to fulfill their social tasks and goals, as stated in the University Act of 2002. This was supported by the Conference of the Senate President , which serves as an important committee for exchange about university tasks.

The dangers of the dictatorship of opinions

In a time when alternative facts and populist currents are on the upper, the Senate chairs fear discrediting the universities and their autonomous research. The politics that could restrict access to the university and disadvantage women and minorities was rejected. Cultural exclusion and discriminatory demands, such as an alleged “fortress Austria”, are also on the list of criticized views. The declaration enacted emphasizes the importance of a constructive discourse and the responsibility of the universities to promote diversity and solidarity in society, while at the same time they have to actively address the upcoming challenges, such as climate change. According to the OTS should define the new Federal Government and the political actors to master these challenges and science the necessary freedom.
