Summer help for the homeless: Vienna increases emergency shelters by 70 places!
The Fund Social Es Vienna (FSW) has increased the capacities in its emergency quarters for the summer months 2025. This is done as part of the efforts to better support the homeless and homeless people in the city. From November 2024 to April 2025, around 3,000 people took advantage of the FSW winter package, which was coordinated and financed in cooperation with seven partner organizations. The utilization remained stable and the capacity boundaries in 13 emergency quarters and three heat rooms were not exceeded, such as Kleinezeitung.at reported.
In winter, 3,400 reports used the FSW cold app to provide quick help. This app enables passers -by to request support from street social work, which means that social workers can specifically inform homeless people about the offers of the winter package. Here, sleeping bags are distributed or aids to impart in suitable facilities of the homeless help.
Expansion of capacities
for the summer of 2025, the FSW provides another 278 places for individuals and 28 places for families in four emergency quarters in addition to the existing around 7,000 residential and care places. This measure is an increase of around 70 places for individuals compared to last summer. In particular, the Caritas emergency district in Meidling will offer sleeping places for 71 particularly vulnerable people with the support of the city and the FSW.
The Diakonie, which also takes care of the needs of homeless people, offers around 800 offers for support nationwide. These contain emergency accommodations, excessive help such as road social work as well as outpatient and inpatient facilities for housing emergency aid. Daily stays that enable the showers and washing the laundry, as well as its favorable meals are other components of the comprehensive support offer.
